Overview and attractions of Amorgos

Amorgos, part of the Cycladic archipelago chain, is the easternmost and most deserted island. Tourists like to come here for walks in the mountainous area. Beach lovers can also find a quiet holiday here because the island has a lot of small secluded bays with clear seawater and beautiful sea bottom. For a long time, there has been archaeological research carried out on the island, during which unique antiquities were found. Now they are kept in the Athens Archaeological Museum.

The city reached its peak of prosperity during the Cycladic civilization. There were three administrative centers on the island, characterized by distinctive white houses, Venetian-style fortresses, and churches, which attract attention with their unusual style of Cycladic architecture.

The impressive building of the monastery, which is immersed in lush greenery against the backdrop of the mountains, is stunning. From here there is a stunningly beautiful view of the Aegean Sea. In the chapel of the monastery are kept ancient icons. To enter the monastery you have to overcome the distance of 300 steps.

Venetian castle

It is a 13th-century fortress, which was built to defend the island. The castle is located on a rock, towering above the settlement of Chora. The height of the massive rock is 64 meters. The walls of the castle are made in the form of cone-shaped holes, from which the enemies were shelled. The castle has a magnificent view of the village.

Church of Agia Anna

A small temple was built on a rock. The church is located on the beach of the same name and is characterized by a traditional style for the island. After visiting this church as well as the monastery of Hozoviotissa, you can enjoy a nice dip in the emerald-colored water on the beach, which is under the small church.

The shipwreck of Olympia

Not far from the beach of Kalotaritissa is the site of a shipwreck. The incident occurred in 1980. The merchant ship "Olympia" came to the shores of the island, but because of the strong winds, it failed to dock and ran into the rocks. Luckily the crew was able to evacuate and a big tragedy was avoided.

Sea Caves

Once you reach the nice pebbly beach of Mouros, behind the rocks you will find two underwater caves, which you can swim and dive. You can get to the beach by bus, car or motorcycle. Nearby there is a small restaurant where you can taste the local cuisine.

Gavras Tower

This structure is located in the central part of the settlement of Chora and is a building erected in Venetian style. Today there is an archaeological museum in the building, where unique artifacts found during excavations are exhibited. Note the ancient sculptures and inscriptions, ceramics, weapons, etc. Almost all exhibits of the museum were brought from the ancient cities of the island.

charter yacht   How to reach Amorgos

Amorgos is visited when going on a long-distance voyage, such as from Athens to the Maternity Hospital or back. This island lies in the middle of the route and it makes sense to stop here for the night. Especially since the city itself is very caloric and worthy of separate attention. It's 145 miles from Athens to Amorgos and 78 miles to Rhodes.

Amorgos Marina Facilities

The marina at Amorgos is very small and very shallow, even when entering the lagoon. Only 4-6 yachts fit on the marina pier. The marina is anchored in front of the town beach.

There is a connection to water and electricity. The mooring fee is nominal, about 6 euros per 45-foot yacht.

You can order refueling at the marina office, which is located near the pier.
