Overview and attractions of Skyros

If you fly over the archipelago of the Northern Sporades, the island of Skyros can be recognized by its butterfly shape. It is nestled in the center of the Aegean Sea, and tourists gather here in search of solitude and a chance to be alone with nature.

Skyros is noted in rich Greek mythology. The young Achilles, who had no desire to fight in the Trojan War, took refuge here. The young man was sheltered by King Lycomedes in his palace, where Achilles lived, dressed in women's clothing. Later Odysseus found him and sent him to the site of the battle on a Scythian pony. Another legend has it that Theseus was exiled to the island.
